Municipal Trading.

They evidently manage affairs somewhat diffciently in Kngland. The dunicipal Journal, referring to the city services in Leicester, which has a 'population ot 220/tw for l'JOl, mjs :—Takrn as a whole, tihe past year's municipal trading at Leicester has U'i-n very satisfactory. The gas, electricity and water enterprises have produced a net profit 01 £71,H2S 13s after paying interest ami putting aside various sums towards the sinking funds. In addition to vhe undertakings nametl, the Corporation own the electric tramways, which already yielded an additional profit oi over 113,000 in less than twelve months' working. The profits from the gas undertaking was exceptionally large and ailet paying interest ami providing a sinking fund, the net balance banded over in relief of rates oi the town reached £49,ouft &> Id. This result Was largely in excess oi the estimate, mainly on account of the new system invented by Mr Alfred Corson, the Leicester gas engineer, lor preventing the accumulation of naphthalene in the service pipes. This has done away with the services ot over 100 workmen and has effected a saving ol over £Jfl,uOo during the year. Before this special treatment of the gas was adopted there Were over IS,MOO cases in eight months of the stoppage of the supply of gas through solid naphthalene crystals being formed in the service pipes. Tins nrcessialed the pipes beinj taken out of the ground to lie cleaned, and was a costly process. The difficulty has been overcome by causing the gas to pass in a fine spray through a specially distilled ml, which washes the napthtluleiic out of th* gas.
