ENCE. • WELLINGTON, July 13. The annual conference o£ representatives of New Zealand Jockey Clubs opened at the Chamber ot Commerce, to-day. Sir (teorge Clifford presided., In his annual report, the Cbaixmam said that most of the clubs during, the year had shown healthy rivalry in the provision of good sport, vrtiile there had been no deterioration ia tire class of horses attracted.. There nad been laxity on the part of some dubs in issuing jockeys' licenses ;no less than 162 jockeys licensed had less than six mounts, and al these fifty did not ride at all, while forty, unlicensed jockeys rode unchallenged. The Accident Fund was stated to have stood the strain of increased demands. Allegations of abuses on the turf were persistently and recklessly made by anonymous slander- , ei's, and occasionally by ill-informed or prejudiced men in responsible positions. These charges were mainly, i the outcome of imaginative ignor|ance, but it was the duty of the Conference to correct whatever abuses did arise and render corrupt practices too difficult and dangerous to be attempted with, impunity. In this* connection he urged the Conference, do consider whether this ownership 0 £ horses by, bootmakers was consistent with the maintenance of public, confidence, in the sport,

! It was resolved that the wfcs be numbered consecutively, ami not as sent out. . ."

A proposal that unpaid entry and acceptance fees should not be collected through the unpaid forfeit list was, negatived,
