The annual conference of delagatcs representing the various agricultural and 'astoral associations throughout
["-> will be opened in the MuWellington, on Tuesday, July 18. The principal matters to be dealt with at the conference are covered in the following notices o( motion given in the advance order paper :—...
: Manures.—Proposed by Hawke's Bay, Canterbury, Wairarapa, Masterton, Palmerston ami Waihemo County and Blenheim: That the Government be urged to nuke arrangements to sterilise imported bones in New Zealand, instead of attempting to do so at the port of shipment. By Hawke's Bay, Canterbury, and Otago : That the conference discuss the practicability of substituting artificial manures for bone manures. By Canterbury and Masterton : That the question of experimental work at the various centres of (he colony be discussed. By Auckland : That the Department of Agriculture he requested to distribute small quantities of nitrifying bacteria in different centres of the colony, with a view of ascertaining its action on t}ur soils.
Ergot.—By Hawke s Bay and Wairarapa : That the conference discuss the question of ergot, its spread, methods of eradication, and how its effects can -best be dealt with.
Noxious weeds.—Bv Hawke's Bay, .Canterbury, Blenheim, Wairarapa, 'and Franklin : That the existing legislation with regard to noxious weeds, and 'especially as to their spread from unoccupied Crown and native lands, be discussed. That steps be taken to investigate ami experiment .with the Canadian thistle, to ■determine whether it is practicable to devise some remedy to cope with it.
Potato Diseases.—By Canlcrburv : That the question of the potato diseases be discussed by the conference. Education.—By Auckland : Thai in the opinion of this conference it is imperative for the weli-being and the development of our agricultural and pastoral resources that the Government should at once take steps to provide a more efficient system of agricultural education in rural distnsts; (a) By obtaining the services of four men, competent to organise a system for the training of public school teachers in New Zealand, which shall fit them to give practical instruction in the elementary principles of agriculture in rural schools, upon the same general lines as those that have been adopted in Canada and the United States or America , (b) Uic men selected lo be employed as organisers and travel' ling instructors in tlic four chief educational districts of the colony in conjunction with the education boards of those districts, to train teachers at the normal colleges and at other educational centres, with a view of introducing into their schools the cultivation of school gardens, and tic teaching of nature study! with a special bearing towards agriculture; <c) by consolidating wherever possible, a number of small country schools into one large central school, and transporting the pupils thereto free from charge. Grasses and rodder Plants.—Proposed by Hawke's Bay and Dunedin : Tha, the conference tako into consideration the practicability of introducing more drought-resisting grasses and plants. That the conference discuss the best means of providing winter feed for stock, especially in the North Island. Proposed by Westland and Auckland : That the conference discuss the practicability of taking steps to improve tlit- quality of farmers' seed, and lo prevent the sale of inferior and unclean seed. Taxing and inspection of Stallions -By Camerbury : That the Govern! merit be askeil to give premiums to the owners oi approved stallions, to enable stockowners to travel their horses in certain districts, and serve a certain number of approved mares at reduced fees. Bv Masterton : That the Government he asked to provide (when required) for the examination of cnlire horses by a Government veterinary surgeon, in order that certificates as;to soundness issued to owners. By Manawatu and Blenheim: That the subject of a non-compnlsory Stud Bill be considered,.
Bees.-By Canterbury and Blenheim I That steps he taktui to ascertain What is the best kind of humble bees to import, Willi a view of fertilising the red clovers of the colony.
Milk.-By Wvsiland : That the question of pasteurising the skimmed milk distributed by butter and cheese factories be considered by the conference.
Dairy Herds.—By Canterbury : That the best means of culling and improving dairy herds be considered by the conference.
Small Birds Nuisance.—By Blenheim : That the question of Ihe small birds nuisance and the Amendment of the Small Birds Nuisance Act be discussed by the conference.
