Captain Allman, of the Manaroa has been asked by deputations ot nautical men to contest one of tho city of Wellington seats at the general election. He will be a candidate, standing in the interests of the shipping 'industry and seamen. In a recent official notice of the New Zealand International Exhibition, Mr T. E. Donne was styled as Chief Commissioner. In the latest corrected edition the title of that gentleman's office is sot forth as Government Representative for the United Kingdom and Continent of Europe. I On the 11th hist. Mr P. A. .Philips, a well known Sydney press correspondent, celebrated the seventyfourth anniversary of. his birthday. Mr I'llilips has been fifty-eight years in Australasia, thirty-three years being s))ent in New Zealand. A private telegram was received here on Thursday!, bringing information that i Mjr John Orr, a well-t known merchant in Athburton, died in Sydney that morning. The deceased_jiad large farming interests in the Aahfmrton County, and hls'husiness career was marked by enterprise and success, Mr T. TV. Haploy, manager of the Equitaiblo Life Assurance Society, for Taranaki anjU Hawke's Hay, is at present in New Plymouth. Colonel Porter, C.H., has been 'appointed to the Native Lund Court branch of the .Justice Department as President of the East Coast district under the Native Administration Act, and has resigned his position as Un-der-Secretary, for Defence. For many years Colonel .Porter's: name has been associated jwith tho East Const (Tnirawliiti) district as Officer Command', ing in his military capacity ; also as Native andi Land Purchase Commissioner, ho is thoroughly experienced and fully conversant wi{h Native Land Courf, laws and native land tenure,, and in an expert in -the Maori language. He still remains upon the active military list of the New Zealand forces, and is the senior colonial .officer.
