Air Thomas Wain, who holds excellent credentials in the scholastic profession, has been appointed to the position of assistant 'muster at the New Plymouth High School, for the last three and a half years Mr Ultvin hasi held the Post ut second assistant a t the Stratford District High School, and recently accepted the charge of thj Pi'irangi and Matau Schools.
Miss Grant applied to the New Plymouth High School Hoard on WeilWednesday for leave of absence from her duties as first ussisutnt during the year 1906, in order that sh« might" study European educational methods more satisfactorily than was possible from magazines, and that she might improve her ac-juainU ance with the ,French und German languages. She had a reasonable hope of getting a position for a few months in the largest secondary school for girls in llerlln. and hoped later on to obtain a similar' posi tion in France. The Hoard, desiring to give every facility for the study of outside methods, granted the application on condition that a Satisfactory temporury appointment could be made.
The Rev. J. Flynn Anderson,.«i chaplain to the forces in South Africa, who is on a tour of the world, is at present in Wellinglton.
Has Honour, Mr Justin Edwards, will leave for Wellington- this morning, in order to attend the Court of Appeal, which opens on Monday.
Mr Robert Spcnce, solicitor, of Stratford, has l been admitted to prtactico as oi too roister of 'Supreme Court of New Zealand. The application 'was granted on tho motion of Mr 6. Samuel, before His Honour, Mr Justice Edwards.
At the mccUing of the Hjgh School ilourd on Wednesday th« Chuirmuj. (Mr N. K. -MacDiarmid) reported that the informal welcome' awarded to Professor Rutherford on his recent visit to New Plymouth had bieew most successful, although the distinguished visitor would entertain no kT " proposals of a public (welcome., Mr MacDiarmid, after referring to the special interest taken by this district in the brilliant young New /.calender, moved tho following resolution :—"The Hoard of Governors of the New Plymouth High School desires to tender to Dr. Ernest Rutherford a hearty welcome on his return to tho land of his birth, and congratulates Mm upon tho brilliancy of his career and tho liigh position he has achieved in 'the scientific world." Mr M. Frascr, in seconding, remarked that the professor was practically a Xaw Plymouth boy, and the citizens were justly pleased at his success. The resolution was carried Unanimously. It is interesting to relate that on'Dcceml:pr (i. ;iß°.l. a«. a. you|ngi '.main' Professor Rutherford was 'appointed a master of the New Plymouth High School, but sent a telegram a Weu.k or 'two later declining the position, as in the meantime he had secured tho 1801 Exhibition Scholarship, which paved the way to Cambridgo and future distinction.
