The International Exhibition.
PRETENTIOUS SCHEMES. CHRISTCHURCH, June 21. At a meeting of- tho executive of the New Zealand International Exhibition, it was stnited that the Government Architect's estimate for the exhibition buildings was £84,000, j and that other buildings proposed brought the total estimate to £9o,r 000. An organ is t<y toe obtained for the exhibition, if two-thirds of the cost is guaranteed by private persons. The executive is to negotiate with Sousa and other bandmasters, English and European,' for visits of bands. The proposals of the Government architect regarding the buildings were considered to he too extensive. The building committee's report on the proposals was> agreed to, with a view to modifying the proposals and havut; main buildings which would permit of extensions. The commlttea recommended that the conditions be referred back to Mr Campbell, Government architect, and' altered as follows : The main building to cost rrom £20,000 to £25,000, and to [>« 900 ft by 150 ft; the cost as ohove to include lighting and wateto" supply to the outside of the building ; the concert hall to form part or the main building, and the art gallery building to cost about £IOOO, dimensions, 120 ft square and about 1000 lineal feet of wall space; the -machinery hall to be 300 ft square and tho plans to allow for extensions. The committee 1 further recommended that the successful architect in the competition for dc igns, be not paid a premium if the plan be accepted, and carried out, the time for receiving designs to be extended to ten weeks from the issue of conditions, and working drawings j to be handed in within six weeks at- ! ter the acceptance of tho designs,
