Combination of Producers.
The following extract from theN.Z Hi&'ald on Friday, should be of interest to our |readcrs.— The .suggestion made by Mr Wesley Spragg that Auckland dairy compan- ■ ■ies should combine for t|ie purpose of ecuring concessions apd advantages in the way of frtsight, rates of cool storage, railway facilities, and .other matters, is one that we have put forward on many occasions. The work that has already lie<>n done b\ ■the incomplete combinations of producers has .been so valuable that- its extension should be carried on consistently. Mr Spragg only advocntct the combination ol Auckland dairy Companies, and states plainly that personally he is not in favour of what is known as .a trading combine, or interference with the lnanagemen|t or, trading of inaividua. companies.- Wo recognise itlnvt even a combination ol' Auckland dairy companies on lines that deal only with large questions affecting dairying as an industry would be capable oil doing much goo'J, but we would, go further that this, and urgi* 'the combination of nil dairying companies in Now Zealand for the purpose of dealing with matters of steamer freight, railway facilities, cool storage, tile regulation of prices and shipments, awl w,vtli legislation aiTecting the industry as a whole. If a combination of Auckland dairying companies is useful for this purpose, a combination of Mew Zealand dairj companies would bo still more powerful and beneficial. However, H ll great movements must have u ,beginning, and once combination is com-' pic ted :n each province it will «nlj' reqfiire one step more to combine ths provinces, and if the union of dairying companies is effected It is highly probabfe that the frozen meat facioriesi would follow suit. Alucl the same . questions affect both industries, and the bulk of producers ■ recognise that in some directions combination can be made mutually advantageous;. We are not inclined' at any time to advocate any lor,, of clos.! -monopoly, but. we certainh think that all interested in both thtdairying industry and the frozen moat industry, could benefit thenu-elvij enormously by combining on broad, general lines and still retain for themselves that individual freedom, for individual actjon which is so necessary for progress.
