AUCKLAND, June 10, Mr KettJo, S.M., talked very plainly to a wife-toeeter hi the Police Court this morning, when a nun named Join Carbey pleaded guilty to having assaulted Adeline Carboy, his wi(fc. Aqcused remarked that it was only a si girt .quarrel, and lie owned that, his wife was right In rofusing to give him money. He wa» drunk at tho time. "Drunken tiH'ii cannot go hoino to batter tholr wives and make drink the excuse," remarked the Magistrate, who told Carboy that he hlad treated his wile in u most brutal manner. Ho intet/lcd to put down such assaults with a strong) hand, and he would have no difficulty in dealing with Carboy, but tor the fact that punifjunent would Jail harder upon his family than on himself. Under \hese circunwtUnces, and taking into eonsiderat'ion that It wan Carbey's, first appealance, accused would be convicted and ordered to Come tip for sentence when called hiion, also prohibited for twelvn months.. "If you Come Iwfore me again for ill-treating your wife," concluded Mr Kettle, 'tion'<t expect any mercy from me."
