(We are not responsible lor opinions expressed by correspondents.) ROADS AN!)'FARMERS' POCKETS [To the Editor.) Sir.—ln your leader of to-day's Is;ue oh "The Highway tio'the North" you properly deplore the difficulties o£ the Taranaki backblock settlers, while admirably backfng up the action of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce in the settlers' interests. I am able to assert from Home business knowledge that Taranaki Province is much- better than any other New Zealand district, therefore I quite agree that the strong®®' pressure should'be used with the New Zealand Government in favour of better roiading facilities. It is apparently one of the failings of Colonial Governments to sit tight and hold the purse strings, however necessary it imay be to grunt xuoney for specific objects. Why should the fanners' interest be represented by. only 25 per cent, of members in thu House at Wellington, while this particular- interest is certainly ?,5 per cent, over all others combined.' The farming interest , of this province ought assuredly to be represented by three out of the four M's.H.lt. allotted to it. Unfortunately the. fanning community scorns to reii.uii'o much ing persuasion to endeavour to obtain this preponderance of voting power, and until they get it there will always be this cry from tjhe backblocks/ | "Give us better roa'ds."—l 4m, etc., \V. D. IIOLBROOK. New Plymouth, June 16.
