New Plymouth Harbour.
LOOKING FORWARD. The President of the Chamber of Commerce takes a 'decidedly optimistic view of the future prospects of the New Plymouth harbour, judging from the following remarks he made in the course of his address to members on Wednesday evening " I think I am expressing the view of every member of this Chamber when 1 say that the members of the Harbour Board are to be congratulated upon the great ability they have shown in the management ot the port. In the face of many difficulties and discouragements ithey have not only kept the harbour in good order, but also put their finances in such a satisfactory state that they are enablod to make a small extension of the harbour out of ordinary rev-, cnue.
" The extension of the tnole is! now recognised as of paramount importance to the district,* and *we may look forward with confidence to the time when wo-shall secure the immense advantage pf having etuamerg discharging their cargo from, London at the breakwater, and loading there as they now do at Timaru ; und wo may further confidently expect within a few years to see New Plymouth made the first port of call from Australia, landing and' taking passcneers for both sides of the North Island." (Laughter and applause.) Mr Fraser, continuing, pointed out, to show that a progressive policy was warranted, that a few years ago the Timaru haitjour was not so safe .as ours. Now that the fine breakwater had been built London agents included Timaru us one of the main ports. This meant a saving to, importers of 12s 6d per ton.
