FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. • Tile New Plymouth Borough Council met on Monday evening'. The Mayor (Mr K. Cock) presided, and there wore also present : Crs. Ewing, [Cliff, Wilson, Brooking, Collis, Burgess, Brown, and 'lJisch. —lnspector's 'Report.— Inspector Kendall reported that he was pursuing as regularly as possible a house to house inspection '• of premise* Ten notices had been served' in connection with overhanging trees ! and other matters. The inspector further started that he had. prepured a list showing tho location of nil water closets and other conveniences necessitating, wctraordinaty water supplies in; town. ■ ilr Scott, of Courtenay Street, had pointed out to him the necessity k for a concrete gutter outside his premises. —Water Service.— The engineer was instructor to prepare an estimate of the cost of lay. ing a water servico for Wallace Place and lYoung Street. * The nspector stated that in addition to other particulars collected, ho had secured the signatures of twelve persons who are willing to have* the borough water supply, provided tho Council lays a main to" servo those properties adja'cent to Wallace Place, cui Barrett Street and the Sinmediato locality. '','".. . Eleven property holders near and r surrounding Standish'e Hill petitioned the Council to have a water main laid passing their respective properties, as they were prepared to connect with the same. Both matters wore/ deferred for report by (the engineer. —A Drainage Matter.—
Mr W; Webber wrote accepting tho Council's offer In referenco to the druin on his property in Clover Street —The Franklcy Road Petition.—
Tho Frankley R»ud residenta wrott accepting the Council's offer to continue (the footpath from the boundary of the tyorougn at JFrankloy Road to connect with] Uw footpath at Dawson Street, on their c<mtri|yuting £lO towards the Cost.
Cr. Brooking moved that the Works Committee's recommendation to proceed with the work be deleted. Ho contended that the footpath was not necessary, and there were many other works which should bp constructed' before tfiat was consdered. . The Council's financial position did not warrant the work.
The Mayor supported the work, an<l did not think an overdraft of a few hundreds should stand in the way of the Council providing conveniences for the ratopayers.
After discussion the motion to delete the . clause was lost, only Cr». Brooking, Ewing, Wilson, and Burgess voting for it, as against five in l favour of the work. "-Removing a Bank.— M* L. F. Bullot wrote with reference to the Council's refusal to nccedo to the reujuest to shift the' blank in front of his residence at Standish's Hill, as the 'borough engineer's estimate for tho same was XI3O, Mr Bullot said he was willing to shift the bank to the level of his section up to a line .with the north of Barrett Street for £6O and tip all the earth into the J\ilford Street gully below the hospital grounds. The clause in the Works' Committee's report was struck out, and the engineer was instructed to confer I with Mr Bullot as to what work the latter indicated at £6O, u report to be presented at the next meeting of the Works Committee- ; —Works Committee.— The report of the Works Commdttee was adopted with the above two amendments.. —Culvert.—
On the motion of Cr. Ewing the engineer was instructed to inspect, the culvert near the Hod House Hotel, and to report on enlarging It. | —Estimates.— The Town Clerk was instructed to prepare a table showing the amount out of the estimates set uside on labour, metalling, asphalting, and channelling. —Vehicle [Licenses.— The inspector was authorised to lake proceedings against defaulters respecting the licensing of vehicles. —Finances.— The Mayor announced that at/ present the general account' showed a debit of £2314 18s 3d. Practically no revenue had been received sincu Jan. 31. The Town Clerk explained that tho account always showed an overdraft at this time of the year. Tho overdraft ,was not usually wiped off by the revenue from rates un(il about September.
