The Whirlwind of Death.
Seldom has a title been more fiilly jnstified than the above for a performance that attracted vast audiences to the Casino de Paris, in the French capital till the catastrophe was reached' oh April 14. The performer was Mdlle Marcelle Randal, who, strapped to a seat of a motor car, was whirled at immense speed down a long chute and round a loop. It was the now familiar feat of " looping the loop,", with the addition that at the topmost part of the "loop" was an "empty space across which the car was. thrown by its speed, landing upon the opposite side. The artist, at the close of the performance, habitually leapt from the car and bowed her acknowledgments to the applauding spectators. On the night in question Mdlle' Randal was feeling indlisposed, -and tha manager begged her not to undertake the feat. This, however, she insisted on doing. At the end .'of the perilous .voyage everyone waa astonished to. see that the performer lay senseless in the car in--1 stead of leaping to the stage in her I usual manner,. Efforts to revive her • proving useless, doctors were called I "in, and pronounced her to be suffering from heart failure. She was lifted from the car and carried to a. hos* pital, where, after lying in a state of coma for some .hours, she expired. According to the Petit Journal, her "death was in all probability caused by the great shock she had to undergo when the motor landed on the chute after the perilous leap. She had been suffering from, heart trouble for some time, induced, it is said, by the recurrence of this shock at every performance. She was only twenty-two yearsof age, and her maid and dresser stated that after her mistress took to the performance she rapidly declined in health. She adopted a careful diet in order to keep her weight at 7Jst. Her eyes were haggard, her appetite went, and she became unusually silent.
