Father Hays' Mission.
ENTHUSIASM IN CHRIST. CHITOCH, (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. • Father Hays has concluded his ten, perance crusade in this Island, and this morning Mi private secretary stated that he has during the past seven weeks- addressed 87,600 persons, of whom 10,135 {oinei tta crusade, Hutacrjjbing their nanea to the tcm|ierancc pledge. Last night's meeting was one of the most remarkable and ettthusktstic witnessed for years in this city* The Canterbury Hall was packed with throe thousand persons. The Lord Bishop of Christchurch presided, and every religions denomination was represented. Bishop Julius paid In the nans of Chrtotefcnrch people he extended a very hearty welcome to! Father Hays. Thousands of men and women worn interested in the splendid work he was doing, and multitudes would take Interest, sympathy, and encouragement from his noble example. The Revs. Mackenzie, on behalf of the Presbyterians, Woodtnorpt. for the Anglicans, Orchard, lor the Methodists, and Gray, for the Baptists, welcomed the distinguished visitor.
Father. Hays, who was received with great enthusiasm, expressed his deepest gratitude to the peoptc of Now Zealand lor tho splendid roodption aosorded him. Bis mission had been wonderfully successful, beyond his most sanguine expectations. His work was lor God and Humanity, to give, the State mora useful citizen* and the churches better Christians, by promoting Urn* jK-rouce, thrift, and industry. Its wanted to break down narrow-mlndr ed prejudice and religious bigotry, and bring all creeds together on a. common platform for the social and moral good of'the people* ■-'Let mil live," he added, i'ln tho fullest n* cognition ul the Fatherhood of Owl land tho brotherhood of man." Father Hays received an ovation lit the close, and five hundred Boman Catholics were informally introduced to him. He leaves to-inor-i-ow for Wellington.
