General.
The question of the employing of foreign seamen 011 Auckland-owned | vessels was freely discussed in local shipping circles yesterday (says the ' Auckland Herald of Thursday), fol-' lowing 011 stal'jineiits made by Mr J. I lv. Knee, secretary of the Seamen's llmion, on this subject. H was learn ' ed that a few days ago there wero eleven sailing vessels of various rigs I at Whangarei, and (.hut out of al! 1 hands employed on board only nine ! were llritish subjects. In nautical | parlance, Whangarei isl known as , "Little Stockholm," in Auckland. Mr I ICneo states that he cannot supply j . m»n—that being illegal—but that he eau, and does, recommend them, anA that, other things being equal, British subjects are invariably stipulated for by certain owners;. The amount of gold entered for export during the first three months of the present year was 123,5)75 ounces, valued at £500,189, making a total to date 16,750,116 ounce. 1 ?, valued at £•05,686,8.37. The figures for the first quarter of 1904 were 125,083 ounces, valued at £479,114. The latest curiosity of the Telegraph Department (says an Auckland paper) is worth recording. A telegram was sent to a gentleman in Wellington, who promptly replied to it. A little while after the sender had received -the reply he was nonplused to get the following notification from the Telegraph Department "I beg to inform you that your, telegram to John Blank, Windy-tcrrace, Wellington, has not been delivered. The addressee is unknown at Windy-terrace.' He is wondering whethor the Department hat yet found out that the telegram was delivered in due course.
