THE PREMIER IN THE SOUTH.
(Per. Press Association.) I . DUNEDIN, May 30. The Premier continued his tour to- I Bay. The announcement he made at Roxburgh Jast night that a sum Would be put on the estiniates l for the Lawrence—Roxburgh railway created much satisfaction, and ho was thanked at Miller's Flat, Beaumont and Lawrence. At Beaumont numerous settlers gathered, and in a short address the Premier said the land about appeared suitable for closer settlement, and they wanted more population. The Opposition Kad stated he was going to take the High Coramissionerehip, tout ho said ho intended to stop and bother them a bit longer* A vote of thanks and confidence was passed. Lawrence was reached at 6 o'clock, ,Tvhtn the Premier, wr.s welcomed by the Mayor and a large number of others. Deputations followed. In, .the evening the Premier addressed a crowded meeting at the Town Hall, tho 'Mayor presiding. Mr Seddon said that the district he had passed through that day would carry fifty timuß its present population, if somo *>f the large estates were cut up. .There„ must,' be a progressive land policy" .adopted ; these estates should -lie taken and population placed on them. .A vote of thanks to the Premier,' and confidence in the GovernJOfXttSBS Carried unanimously.
