LOCAL AND GENERAL.
It is understood, says the I ost, that Parliament will meet for the despatch of business on Thursday, 29th June.
To save disappointment country settlers will do well to note that next Saturday, June 8, (Prince of Wales' Birthday), is a close holiday for the Money Order and Savings Bank office. The post otlice is open in other branches from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. only.
Two years ago the Defence Department held an enquiry in connection .with certain remarks made by two volunteer officers in Auckland criticising the methods of the Department. It is now announced that tho has called upon both of- | fleers to tender their resignations.— Postj
Discussing the (picsHon of sheepdog trials at a conversazione in |Christchurch, Mr G. Witty, M.H.R., said that the dogs would often do ■better work without the men who ivcre supposed to be directing them. It was the same with members of the House of Representatives. If they were left alone, they would do ft. great deal better.
| Mr W. T. Jennings, M.H.R., says the Times, is responsible for the suggestion that one of the earliest Parliamentary picnics during tho forthcoming session should be to tho Midland railway works.' The suggestion, which has been communicated to the West Coast members, is ■tliat the party should leave Welling'ton on a Friday night for Lyttelton, tak'o the overland route to jGreymouth, and leave that port by 1 steamer on the Monday.:
The well-known Hartley and Riley |drodge met with a peculiar mishap a I week or two back. Her buckets | brought up an old anchor, protoaib'ly belonging to one of the now prehistoric spoon-dredges. This anchor !penetrated Iho pontoon of tho dredge lu'low the water line, and IJecamp | wedged between the dredge's ladder and her pontoon. The water was ;kept down by ejector pumps, and a diver was engaged in Dunedin, who succeeded in freeing the dredge of its awkward and embarrassing parasite. His report is rather interesting reading. He states that on going under-
ncath the dredge he found the anchor completely wedged, with its stock ! through itheKliiy v>f the dredge's 1 ladder, its fluke being underneath, nnd l . its head, with a chain attached, be- ' ing through the pontoon. The anchor ' was immovable, und tho only course . was to cut the anchor through at the stock with a small hack saw. This, 1 of course, had to bo vlone under wat--1 cr, and it occupied the diver a day ' and a-half. He says it was a lmti.torl- - ous task owing to Ihe muddy state of tho water and the swift current of the Molyneux, which was running at ' about seven miles a" hour. The djv- • er also patched up the hole made in tho pontoon, and tho directors state that they are very (pleased jlit thp suc- ' cessful job ho l made. Mr 11. W. Lucy, writing to the ; Sydney Morning Herald says : —lhere ' is just now current a remarkablo - wfiive of sickness, in London, previously 'clogging the wheels of social life. 1 happened to know of a little ' dinner party arranged for last Tues- ■ Say, at which the American Ambas- : jsaidor and Mrs Choate were to be , present p.p.e. Forty-eight hours beIfore the dinner came a forlorn note 1 from his Excellency,, announcing that s both he and Mrs Choutc were in) • |bed with influenza. Of a small party I twelve all told, only three present : were guests who had originally, ' three weeks earlier, accepted the invitation, The rest were on the siek- • [list. I£ we, by rule of three, applied this proportion to the whole, after the manner of by-elections and the prospects of a general election, it ' I would appear that something exceeding one-third of London society is on tho sick-list. It is, perhaps, not so bail at that ; but the epidemic is : remarkable in its extent and persisitence. The chief attack comes from i our old friend influenza, though tho form in most cases is comparatively mild'. Oddly enough, it 1 avoids the 1 Treasury Bench, usually a favourite hunting ground. A favourite victim, the I'rime Minister, would be inclined just now to submit to a I moderate attack with feelings of re- | pulsion 1 , not unmixed with a sonce of Compensation. Having in' respect of etribfirraKsing resolutions on the fisIcal question tried the previous 'question and 1 b'oltlng, hp anight prefer influenza, which has before this kept him away from the House of Commons at inconvenient epochs. ! On Monday next, May 29, Mr Newton King will hold a clearing nalc ol Hairy -cattle at Fitonkley Road on account of Mr Isaac Ilolloway. Tho cows, although few in number, ;area real choice lot, and will provo a valuaMo acquisition to any milk- J Jug herd. Particulars will be found ' on reference to advertisement in an- I other column.
| Mr J. K. Chatterton, the well|known boot importer, comes in for notice by the Australian Leather, J Journal, an attractive trade paper j published- in Melbourne. 'Mr Chatter- | ton's rhyming advertisement—which jrucently ap|>carotl in the Daily ISyivs (' —is quoted at length, and the Journal winda up by remurking that, Mr Chatterton must bo a descendant of the family who produced the youthful Bristol .genius of the 18th' een|tury«
