| NOTES BY - MOTUROA.'-' Nominations close to-day for the Wairarupa Hack guineas. The racing at Wanfcanui and Takaunji has jiot thrown much light on •lie coming Winter Carnival at Elerslie.
Of the 18 Great Northern Hurdle acceptors, 15 have donned the colours this week. Iluydn, with slt> ess than his National weight,
turted in the first Hurdle Race at ?akapuna, but could only get fourth,, rish, Hakuriu, and Princess ofThulo ibeing the pluced horsts. In the Great Northern Hurdles Haydn meets Irish oil 61b, Haknria 91b worse terms, and Princess of Tliulc on 51b (better terms. Creusot was seen out in one race at Wonganui, the Stceplechaso in which ace he ran off.
Trumpary got third in the Century Hurdles. She will meet Cavalry and [Miss King who beat her on lib and 61b worse terms in the EUerslio 'race.
Regarding Romeo, there seems somo doubt about his starting. No word has been received of his doing any schooling work at head tjuarters-. However, it is stated he is a fair hand at tho game, and if he goes to, post he is bound to be warmly supported. He is particularly well treated wilh llsL for a harse endowed with his pace and staying u4>ility. Waiwora is next on the list, I'm afraid 1 must pass hiin. He is never partial to tho left handed going at Ellerslie, besides which Mr Evitt has allotted him Btb more than his Wanganui impost. Levant will have to improve on his Wangunui form. Hautapu may find two miles and n Quarter a bit too much. Miss King, on form, looks to possess a good chance. She will meet Cavalry on 51b better terras than at Wangnnui. Cavalry, if he remains sound will be a hard nut to crack. Lady Ilune h'as been supported in doubles, and is stated to be a proficient juini*. er, bint has no public form to recommend her. Irish and Inniskillcn are tw« that will beat more than beat them. A good word is spoken regarding the former's performance at Takapuna last Saturday, Irish beating Hakaria by sheer gameness—a quality which' carries a deal of weight in hurdle racing. Inspan and the Porirua trained Waitarcre did not show to Advantage this week, but the latter is ibound to improve consideraßjily 'tj ro the Auckland fixture, and should I <jt be discarded.
Of the chasers there is not much to comment upon. Pp-to-datc has- arrived at Auckland and according to reports OS looking sound and well. Tho Guard was not seen out at Wang ami) for some reason. Kintere was summed up as a good thing for the Takapuna Steeple, but could only get secnd, dead-heating with the old staffer. Nor'-West. Defoe made his debut as a chaser this week, running second to Evening, a creditable performance. He should be heard of at F.lilerslie. Jnniskillen has done all he has been asked, winning the two steeples at Takapunu, but he will find tho Ellerslie course a stiff task. Evermore was a starter at Takapuna on two occasions but made no showing. Tho fact that Waiturere was pullod out in preference to The Guard at
Vunganui may be somothing to go on, and 1 shall not bo surprised to ee Waitarere have a good following if he goes to the post. Tho two-year-old Petticoat (Multiorm—Bloomer) recently purchased at Jlr G. G. Slead's sale has joined Mr F. Iliggot's stable at the Hult. L. 11, Hewitt took his departure for Sydney by Tuesday's steamer. He will take on engagements during th 6 winter months. It is. stated that ho is undecided whether lie will return to this colony. J. H. I'rosser lind a lunge team at Wanganui, but only secured one stake
—the Borough Handicap—with Chivalry.
The ex-Aucklander, Kamo, (Seaton Delaval—Waitemata) won the Brighton Handicap, six furlongs, at Caulfield, on tho 6th inst,
l'utty paid u false price in the Emigre Handicap last Wednesday. The Uvreo months' disqualification imposed on Hewitt by the Dunedin Jockey Club expired this week. There are rumours afloat that one of the candidates in the Hurdle Raco at Tokapuna last Saturday was got at in tho box the night before the meetings It is stated tftat Te Aroha's defeat in the ltoyal Iltandicap last Saturday cost her cdnnections a fair sum. The mare got chopped out at. tho start, and was never able to get near the field afterwards. An Auckland scribe writes that tho run put in by Hohoro when he won the Royal Handicap last Saturday was little short of miraculous. When the field hud gone a furlong, ho was lost but one, and must huvu been fully twenty lengths behind the leader, and from then on Wis rider was tinrc( at at hlrn, and catching his iiold one by one, he got on terms wltli Millie, who was then ill the lead, a short distance from the txxst, and hM-Ued it light out, eventually winning by a neck. It was a groat victory for a great sprinter. Jly his victory in the Takapuna Steeplechase Inniskillen incurs a 711) IK-nalty for tho Groat Northern Steeplechase, and his impost in vhu Ellerslie race will be wised fyom |G.sj, 101b to 10st 3tt>, The Fra torpile gelding is now as good a fuvurtite as any for the Great Northern Steeplechase.
Evening, tho winner of tho Wangnnui Steeplechase, is not engaged, in tho Great Northern Steeplechase. Defoe, who filled the role of runnerup to Evening, iigures in the Ellerslio race.
llautapu was scratched -f«r all engagements a(: th« Auckland Racing, winter meeting at 1.45 p.m. yesterday.
