Military Ball.

Quite a transformation scene was presented at the Brill -Hall 1 on Thursday, on the occasion of the Turanaki Rifle Volunteers' annual ball. The idccoi'attons of bunting and evergreens were carried out in most complete and artistic style, the erfeqt being very pleasing. Tho function was most enjoyable and successful from every point of view, and the attendance, estimated at over 430, is accredited as a record. Sir Joseph Ward, Drs. Mason and Valintine, the Mayor and' Mayoress', and Mr. 13. M. Smith, M.H.R., were present. Among the officers were Co.onol Ellis, Lieut.-. Colonel Okey, Major Malone, Adjutant Weston, and Captaina Okcy and Mills. Representatives from theTaranuki Guards, and tho Waitara, ln(rluwootl, Stratford, and Hawera | Corps also attended. The floor was i in perfect trim, and the music, au\y | plied by McKinnon Data's popular orchestra. A long dance programme | was carried out with /.est, the M's.C. being Adjutant Weston, Privates J. Tippins and Humphries, and Mr E. L. Humphries, A drawing-room, tastefully decorated with palms' and ferns, and tho balcony provided pleasant retreats, while for non-dnnc.ers rooms were set apart for cards and, "pit." An excellent supper was spread in two rooms, the table arrangements being a credit to the ladies' committee, Mesdamcs G. Cook, F. W. Okey, E. Dockrill, McClcland, F. E. Clarke, T. S. Weston, O'llriscoll, Joseph/, H. Bishop, and Ellis ; Mjsscs Humphries, Hempton, t. Cock. H, Cfarke, jlopkinson, ant} Davy.
