NOTES BY " MOTIIROA." " rheaton," the Auckland sporting .scribe, selects Trumpery, Romeo and Lady Hune us a likely trio for the Great Northern Hurdle Race. Princess of Thule, Kailere, Mocassin, Evermore and Trumpery are his fancies for the Steeplechase. " Fhacto*" expresses himself forcibly on Mr Everitt's handicapping I'p-■to-Date 12st 71b in the hurdles, not, ing the fact that the. horse failed very badly in the race last year with Ist 101b, ttnd on Boxing Day, with a like impost, he was beaten out of a place. tlp-tc-Datc has not won a race over small sticks in the interval. Defoe, with H. Telford up, covered about two miles and a half on the Vollington. Steeplechase courso one
day'last weak, jumping in good style. Ail going well he will fulfil Wanganui and Auckland engagements. liullur.it and Black' Reynard are reported to be galloping in good stylo on tho Hutt tracks. Hydrant was tried over the sticks
at the Hull the other day, and shnp-. Ed fairly well for a novice. Some of the, railway companies in
France recognise the effect the big tu'o meetings have upon their trails. The live largest Companies conributc £2uOo towards the Graml Mx de l'aris.
A Wellington writer states that Maniapoto has shown some signs of orencss. l'roxser considers him a horoughly sound horse, and that a.
ew weeks respite from hard work nil be all this is necessary for him o throw it off. Nothing dolinite is jiown concerning h}s future- move-
ments, though rumour has ilt he may e nominated f or the A.J.C." Septmber Meeting, also for the New
Zealand Cup. T. Vritchard, who had his collar
l>one broken when Defoe fell with him at the local meeting last February, has bwn voted iilo by the Racing Conference. Half of this sum
is swallowed up for doctors expenses, and as l'riichard missed several meetings through !>e|ng laid up ne is of opinion that the Distressed Jockeys Fund, might be more liberally distributed, Racing at Takapuua to-day and Wednesday. The double event tote will be worked each day. The combination to-day is the Empire and lloynl Handicaps, while on Wednesday it will he the Hritanuia Handicap and Steeplechag. The. of T)o-i«-T: n v in he Autumn Handicap ,u Ashbur.on Inst week caused u deal ol comment, the decision of the Stewards not be-
ing received favourably. In the evidence it was admitted that uncross which took place did nor aifect the chances of Calibre and Ti role, the placed horses, while Hi? fnct of Calibre being owned Ivy the president of tho c|u M did not tend to decrease crjticism. Convoy nppeais to have lost his form. He hud nothing very brflianl to boat in tho Ashbnrton Handicap. He was ridden by Derret but finished unplaced.
Cavalry and Full Cry nre doing good works 0 „ the Wungunui tracks. L. Jenkins' record of winning mounts totals 78 so far f„ r the season, winch has two months to run.
