(We are not responsible for opinions T expressed by correspondents.) | NEW ZEALAND DEFENCES. (To the Editor.) Sin—l am enclosing a cutting taken from the Now Zealand Time. May G, which I trust you will be able to find spade for. It is such an impor- I tnnt subject, and so applicable to New Zealand, as showing the utter absurdity of our wasting such huge sums annually for defence purposes, that f* cannot refrain from sending it to you. You will be quite aware, in all probability, much belter than myself of the huge expenditure that is going on every year for defence in New' Zealand, and which I have always thought to be a fearful waste of m»ney and a most scandalous proceeding altogether. The enclosed cut-: ting only goc*' to confirm the opinion I have held for years past on this important matter, and if all the millions that have been spent, abso lU teIv wasted, had been put into roads and bridges, what a hu ß py and contented people we should be.—l am, etC "' COLONIST.
