The "American Invasion" forced itself under Bishop Julius' notice in a rather unlooked-for manner when he was in Rome during his vis-it to Europe, and he was afforded a good opportunity of seeing how some branches of the "Invasion" were conducted. In conversation with a guide, he was told that, large numbers- of Americans visited the city in the summer. "In the summer," he said, "I can hardly understand Americans-visiting Rome for pleasure in the summer." "But they come to work," the guide replied. "To work? What on earth do they work at ? " "They are school teachers, and they come to Rome ta study, working hard all the time." Ilishop Julius then realised that the American teachers saved up both their money and their holidays in order to carry on their studies in Rome and to advance themselves in their profession. "Do teachers also conic from England ? " -lie asked. " No," was the reply. The incident, the Bishop remarked to a representative of the Lyttelton Times, was a striking ■one, and it was ulso significant and tvpical of the methods of the two nations.
