PERSONAL NOTES.
Mr Fred Stohr is confined to his bed with a serious attack of pneumonia.
The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Massey, M.H.R., who addressed a meeting in Stratford on Monday night, left for Auckland by Tuesday night's .steamer.
A soc'al gathering was held in the Whitelcy Hull on Tuesday afternoon to meet J)r. and Mrs North, of Chandporo, Bengal, where the former is conducting mission work for ihe. .New Zealand Baptist Union. There was 0 good attendance, and a plensnia afternoon was spent, afternoon lea being provided by the ladies, and musical items rendered. I'r. North, who gave a .short I'aivwc.'l address, leaves for Wanganui this morning.
Mr W. Massey, M.H.R., Leader 1 f the Opposition, addressed a pubic meeting in Stratford on Momla> evening. The speech was mainly on Ihe lines of the speaker's address i : the South, with particular refercneto ihe questions touched upon by tin Premier when in Slratford. Finance anil lands for settlement were U-; chief subjects dealt with. At tie conclusion of -the address, the meeting placed on record its appreciation of the services to the colony of the Leader of tie Opposition, and thanked him for his "able, straightforward, and interesting address."
Mr John Cook, who was connected with several of the lunatic asylums in tho colony, died at his residence in Wellington last Wednesday, after a short illness. He came to New- Zealand in the early sixties, and was placed on the staff of the Dunedin Asylum. A few years later he and his wife took charge of the Asylum at Hokitika. In 187<1 he made a trip to Great Britain, and on his return he received an appointment on the staff of the Mount View Asylum, retaining the position until his death Deceased leaves a widow and a daughter.
