Our Letter Box.

(We are not responsible for opinions I expressed by correspondents.) I " ADVANCE " —" NEW PLYMOUTH." (To. the Editor.) | Sir—Your Letter-Box is capital this morning. "New Plymouth " gets I la dig at "our energetic Mayor," and goads him to "initiate a n\ovemont" so as to get the Governor to come here. By all means get him to eome and give him a big reception and a banquet and a ball. Then "Advance writes* to set the Chamber of Commerce and Tradesmen's Association by the ears. He wants a deputation to wait on Sir Joseph Ward so as to have the steamers run every day to Auckland. Why not while we aro about it make it twice a day, and free tickets for members of the l'ress and Borough Councillors and members of Chamber of Commerce and Tradesmen's Association and Labour Liberal and Socialists Leagues? Sir Joseph has promised a "Hall-By-The-Sea" (or is it to listen to a deputa-

tion about it ? ) why not get him to make the shipping companies run their steamers oftener and cheaper for nothing, I should like—and the capitalists to buy those Boi ou#b Bonds that we have been hawking about so long, and charge us. 3-1 per 'cent instead of the 5i per cent that we I pay now ? Perhaps ho might oven start a tunnel under Moifnt EgI Uiont, like the Simplon. It would be ja "splendid ad. " and why should not Taranaki have one as well as Switzerland? The Governor and Sir I Joseph Ward coming here, even if it does no otKer good, and don't fill our empty shops or dwellings or reduce our rates, may get some of us introduced to Royalty, and perhaps 'a chance of speechifying and a cheap feed, and the whole lot of us ca» 'clap hands and yell at any rate. So 'more power to you "New Plymouth 'and "Advance" and make "our ener Igetic Mayor" jig to your pipmg. Yours, etc., PROGRESSIVE NEW PLYMOUTH. May 15, 1905.
