BeganVng the comments by the •Coroner oil the absence of any repre- ■ sentiitivo of the Railway Department .at the inquest on lire Prendergast, •on Friday, the Traffic Manager, Mr F. S. Whitconibe, states that he only received intimation of the inquest iifty minutes' before it opened, and was informed by the police that hj, would only be necessary for u certain railway employee to attend. In reply to a question if the Department would be represented, Mr Whitcombc had said that as the case was a clear one the police would be able to manage it themselves. When Mr Whitcombc was informed of the time of Iho inquest he *as just leaving by train. Had he that the absence of a representative of the Deijartmcnt would be looted upon as a discouritesy, he would have seen that the Department was represented, and would have put off his own journey.
