(Received May 12, 9.50 p.m.) LONDON, May 12. Lord Lansdowne, Minister for Foreign Affairs, explaining the Marshells and Caroline Islands settlement, said that Germany maintained that her attitude was perfectly justified from a iegal standpoint, but intimated that she felt it most uiulcsirajbJe toot in a matter of trifling importance there should be any serious difficulty between the two Governments. The Imperial Administration would collect tlio revenue and meet necessary expenditure, but would not protect in especial manner any particular interests. The British claims were under investigation.
