The Daily News. WEDNESDAY, MAY 3, 1905. A RECORD PREMIERSHIP.

Ttc completion of the twelfth year of Mr Scddon's Premiership on Monday is an event that cannot be passed over without notice. The one fact which.' stands out prominently above all others is that The Right Hon. Hichard John Seddon holds the record for the duration of a Premiership. In the 37 yours which elapsed from the time of Henry Sewell bo

.ouiiug l'rcitnier in 185t>, to the death of the Hon. J. JJullance in 1893, there were no less than 20 changes of viovernuiciit, the term of most of these being very limited. When, howover, Jlr Seddon was culled upon to lill the place of his lute lumeutod chief, it seemed us if a new era hud dawned for the colony. The advantages that have resulted from settling down to the development of a wise and judicious policy of progress, aavo been amply demonstrated during the lust twelve years. Moreover it has been a period of unexampled prosperity, in which both the individual and the community have participated. Conditions of life have been greatly improved for the workel's of ail classes, and the resources of the colony judiciously developed, it is only natural, therefore, that the great majority of the men and women of this colony (have realised to the full the need for continuing in oitico the Uovcrmncnt which has so thoroughly proved that its policy is entirely, directed, in .the first .place, towards the attainment of the greatest good for the community, and then for enhancing the colony's position in the eyes of the world. The question of Jlr Scddon's peculiar fitness for the high office which he holds is one that is already impressed on the pages of modern history. That the legislation of this colony should be watched with such close interest throughout the Empire, and beyond, is of itself no mean tribute to Mr Scddon's adm, nistratjve genius and ability. He has a record that may well be envied by any Premier, and a popularity so deeply rooted that it is continually growing in all directions. Not the least remarkable effect of the past twelve years' administration has been exhibited in the attitude of the Conservative! Opposition. So great a change has been wrought in their opinions that they stand to-day on Quite a different platform to that of yore. They have had such an object lesson in wise and progressive Government I hat they have taken to heart some of

the teaching, and all they have to offer now is practically a mere change of men to continue the policy which has proved so eminently successful. To all appearances, the time for any such idle change aw this is very far off. Mr Seddon has accumulated such

i vast store of experience, possesses ■well ripe judgment, and is so keen to discover the feelings of the country on all points, that it would be nothing short of a national calamity were he to quit, the- helm. Such a record as he Ims created is a trimte to his self-sacrificing efforts to butler his fellow men, nnd an honour to the colony over whose dessines may he long preside.
