AH INTERESTING DOCUMENT.

(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 30. Mr C. 11. Mitford, of the headquarters of fj lo Uank of Kow Zealand, has in his possession the first publicans license issued in New Zealand, it is dated 13th October, 1840, itr signed by G. Cooper, Colonial Treasurer, and countersigned by George M. Mitford. father of Mr C. 11. Mitford, who is now ninety years of ag-e and still in excellent heulth. The license was granted by Justice Peace at Kororareka. (Hay or Islands, now Russell) and was issued lo John Johnson, who wus authorised lo "sell ale, beer, or other malt l&ptors, or wine, cider, gingor beer, spruce beer, brandy, rum, or other fermented or spirituous liquors." From tho fact that whisky is not mentioned on tbq license it would appear that it had not then obtained any degree of popularity ,•
