SIR J. G. WARD'S YIEWS. INTERCOLONIAL RECIPROCITY, (Received April 19, 10.19 p.in.) The Lord Mayor entertained Sir Joseph Ward at lunch, when 140 representative citizens were present. Iu proposing Sir Joseph's health he said New Zealand was attracting attention all over the world. He referred to the remarkably successful period of recent years. Sir Joseph Ward, replying, after dealing with the financial position of New Zealand, referring to the friction between the Australian Federation Spates, urged them to exercise patience. History, lie said, showed that it would take some years before the former independent colonies could be expected to conform to the new coml.tions. He also expressed the opinion that before the best financial results could be obtained the Federal Administration would require to take over the State ■debts of the former colonies, and return on a population basis to each State their proportion of revenue alter interest and other charges for Federal adminis- ■ Itration had been provided. .Dealing with reciprocity between New land and Australia, Sir Joseph urged the statesmen of Australia to go into the matter seriously," ''Why nqt let us make a beginning,'- ho aslied, "and so give an opportunity to further improve trade between the re-
