THE WESTERN PARK.
When the Uorough Council effected an exchange with the School Commissioners and parted with the land lately used ago, sip; for the exhibition building and grounder, receiving as an equivalent what is now known as the Western Park, they .secured lor the town an asset which might well excite the envy of any large centre in the colony. The transaction was on whlph reflected the givatcst credit on alj concerned, un<( as time i goes on the publicsspirt which was exercised in the matter will be more and more appreciated. Slowly, but surely, the work of improving this reserve has been going on undpr the superintendence of the eonimitj.ee set up by the Borough Council'. So quietly and unostentatiously have this committee worked that ,wo venture to say a Considerable number of Gitfzenß do no), even know there its such a recreation ground, and there are others who, having that much' knowledge on the subject, havelitth) Idea «f the extent or loonjitj; of the park, which lies 1» the 'West of the Old People's Homp, f Those wfio havo found their way to the trig'atatiOD mj|hß summit- nf_i.hooi«i,o ho.„.
been well rewarded for their trouble, the magnificent views of land and sea amply repaying them for the ascent. At present the funds available for are very small, but, [even so, good work is being dono. For some time past prisoners have been allowed by the Justice Department to work on the hill-side, forming what should prove a most attractive tennis and ci'oqutt ground. Before long a first-class cricket ground will bo available, olid the ornamentation of the grounds will be taken in hand. It is time, however, that the exertions of the hard-working committee should be encouraged in a practical way—financial assistance, for IK' reason that the more funds there are available for the work the sooner it will ba accomplished. It is a work in which the public ought to assist, and no doubt they will do so when they realise on the spot what a credit it js to 'the town to possess such a magnificent reserve. We have already published the names 1 of those gentlemen who constitute the board, and the public should feel every confidence thai what those gentlemen take in hand will be well done.. It is a matter for congratulation that the board has the. benefit of the services of such an able business man as hon. .secretary and treasurer. So . much always depends on the elllciimcy and influence of this oflicoi- that it is indeed fortunate that Air <'• George has undertaken the duties. If the proposed concert by the Wanganui Garrison Band isi given on Easter Monday the public should make a point of being present, andthus use the opportunity to show their practical sympathy with the work which the board is carrying out for the benefit of the citizens ally.
