Mr S. Cornell has been re-elected .Mayor of Napier, unopposed. Mr H. Mullholland, late of Otakeho, had purchased a hotel near Feilding. Mr F. Pratt has been elected Mayor of Sumner (Christchnreh), unopposed. Mr Sydney Ward has been nominated for the coming election of Stratford Borough Councillors. Tho Waihi Tclograph understands that the successor to the lute Monsignot Paul, of Onohunga, will be Monsignor O'HeiKy, of the Thames. Charlis Albert Pinard, who succeeds M. Kiard d'Aunel as t'on-sul-Ueneral for France in the Commonwealth of Australia, has arrived in Sydney. Mr .1. Dunstow, of Otakeho, who is retiring from active operations, has purchased a property near New Plymo'uUi, and goes into residence next month, Mr .Justice Denniston hns been gran tod three months- leave of absence owing to ill-health, and with h'is- associate, Mr A. ],. Denniston will leave on the 2Gth ins't. foi Aneiiea, via the South Sea Islands.
Mr (J. P. Husking, who is leaving tho Treasury Department to enter into private business .in Wellington, was presented by his former colleagues in the department on Saturday last with a gokl watch us a mark of esteem.
Captain AY. I). Roid, Superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Auckland, having resigned, Captain 11. Fleming, of Dunedin, has been nppninted to the position, and Captain Norman 'Beaumont Ims 'been appointed to a similar position in Dunedin. Mr J. F, Macmahon arrived in New Plymouth on Monday evening to prepare the way lor the appearance hero of the well-known actor anil author, Mr George Dnircll, who, with the support of Messrs Macmahon's powerful company, will appear at the Theatre Royal for a special season of three nights', commencing on Easter Monday. At tho oflice of the Auckland Provincial Agricultural Association on Friday, a presentation of a purse of sovereigns was made to Mr drain ger, who has been the treasurer ot the association since its inception, nearly 14 years ago. A silver-mount-ed purso was presented to Miss Dora (ijrainger, and a fountain pen to Mr 'Grainger's clerk, Mr J. Robertson.
A presentation was made on Saturday last tp Mr Lush, head carpenter at the breakwater works, by bis fellow employees. The gift, which took the form of a handsome marble clock, was handed to the recipient by Mr F. Henderson, the Harbour Board's foreman, who referred to Mr Lush's many goad {qualities as an employee and comrade. The foreman also remarked upon the cordiu,l feeling existing throughout the stall. He concluded by wishing Mr Lush and his bride happiness and prosperity.
It in (says tho llawera Star) with sicere regret that we have to record the death, at the early age of 35, of Mr Jas. Lambic, son of Mr. R. Lambiel of Pihama, which sad event took place on Saturday at the Hawera Hospital. Deceased had suffered for some months from a serious illness, and though at times he appeared to recover he latterly grew worse and was brought into the hospital about a week .ago. For some time before his death he was unconscious. Early on Saturday he appeared to he sinking, and a nine o'clock he passed "quietly away. Mr Lambie was well-known' formerly as one of the best forwards that ever playeii footfoaM in TnrannM. Ho was in the rep. team for several yours, and went to Australia with a' New Zealand team. He was .very popular and highly esteemed, both' on and off the field, and his untimely death j will be deeply mourned bv a 'large circle of friends. To his family and relations we tender our deep * sympathy.
