The Daily News. FRIDAY, APRIL 14, 1905. YESTERDAY'S CEREMONY.
Que of the main—if not the foremost, condition to be considered by any community, 110 mutter of what size, in the. obtaining of a plentiful supply of pure water. Water enters into our daily requirements more than any gilt of nature, and il therefore follows that it plays an important part in the spread and prevention of-countless diseases. Cities which are fair to look at aro veritable death traps simply through the indifference or indolence of tho inhabitants as regards the source of water supply. Happily our own municipal authorities have been long keenly alive to the necessity of safeguarding the public health of this town, and many years ago a water supply schema sufficient for the then needs of the population jvas completed. But as the community increased it was imperative to 1 have a larger system.the auspicious inauguration of which was neld yesterday. With tho Mayor, wc recognise this as making an epoch in our municipal history. The wort has been w<itl carried out, and great credit reflects on all concerned in its construction, from the "Mayor and Councillor!), the engineers, the contractors and the workmen. The cost. £27,000, seems perhaps a large sum but no ratepayer, after having realised the groat benefits conferred, will begrudge tho extra rate involved. While on the subject, however, it may be as well to reiterate our contention that every inducement should 'be offered to persons outside the borough, on the line of mains, to get connections, for it is certain that a large and welcome revenue would be derived therefrom.
