A | suggestion was made subsequently that the portico and clock tower t, should be built projecting over tie Devon Street footpath, in order u that the clock should be visible from the town. Mr Smith, nc- v cordingly made representations to to the Government authorities, who ( i agreed to the proposal, and under- i, I took' to write to the New Plymouth ' fl Borough Council for the neciss.uy j permission, to extend over the foot- n path. This matter has le;l to further t delay in the completion of the: plans, ij for which, apparently, the Public Works Department blame the Horough Council, judging by the follow- j iiig telegram received on Wednesday - by Mr E. M. Smith, M.11.it., from the Hon. W. Hall-Jones, Minister for . Public Works : "Your wire re New Ij Plymouth post oilice rrc.ivjJ. In accordance with your suggestion to the Postmastor-Oeneral that the portico might project over the Povon Street footpath, the Public Works , Department wrote to the Borough Ij Council for permission to draw plans i accordingly. No reply has yet been received. Please hurry them up.."
