STATEMENT BY SIR J. G. WARD. -MELBOURNE. March 30. Sir Joseph Wnrd, interviewed, said that New Zealand was endeavouring to get Canadian steamers to call at New Zealand ports, but he understood the Canadian Government opposed the proposal. Referring to the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire into the demand of leaseholders for the right "to purchase the freehold, he said lie was inclined to think the country* would hesitate to - give tenants of repurchased properties the right to concert them into freehold. . .
