Kiuin er's Heport ~ 'J"hc engineer (Mr Gibbon) reported us follows : Waterworks Contract.—With the ex -option of closing in the side drive nil sha:"t tilts tun id has practically i eei; compiled. The cut ft'o • the m'o ■•hamber with the Wahvakniho i ; n •nrrt. unit will l»i finished in a day ii- mo. Reservoir.—This work will ha\> tivn completed by the end of the n»xt week. The work has been wel and expeditiously carried out. Septic Tank.—T;.e contractor is getting well forward with the ci'.ci ttion. and there will not ho much eft to do by the end of the week. The (.round on He Curr.e Street side is h'nivy and soapy, and the concrete for this work should in my opinion be increased in thickness. I ruhmge 1 am getting- OIL- .Jyilh the drainage fairly well, and hope to have finished up to Weymouth Street during the coming fortnight The pipe has been laid down Taint naki Lane, and the manhole built ready for the pipe bridge to connect to. Morley Street.—lf the weather continues fine good progress should he made with this work during the rortniirht. I have had to get two of the standard survey blocks lowered on account of the cutting, end two pin plugs will required to be lifted. Channelling.—l have recommended imtting down the concrete chinnels by day labour. Courtenay Street, near Hobson Street, being the most urgent, I have taken it first, and will follow on with Arlki Street,. Metoll.:ng.—This work is not proceeding as satisfactorily as I coulh wish, and I have written to the contractor on the subject. The street I commenced on was Gilbert Street, and when that is finished the South 1 Road will be taken next. Elliot Street).—Before proceeding to ' metal TCllot Street 1 think it would be a mistake not to do something i the road between Calnieron and .lohn ■ Streets, either by way of filling beJ tween the two points mentioned or • bv partially grading Eliot Street. Cameron Street,—This street hasj ' been finished as far as available ma- ' terial is concerned. A protection ' fence of about four chains in length is rexruiiod where the road has not been 'brought out to the fuU width. General-.—l have been kept very busy during the last week In connection with the valrious works* in progress, and in laying out the power house and fail race. 1 have arranged to consult wilh MrMostayer as to the intake and the septic tank. It was decided to give effect to the recommendations.
—Defective Footpath.— Mr .Tns. Paul wrote drawing at Icntion to the very bad state of th» footpath in Queen Street l>otweon King Streit and the South Houd. 'J"Iio engineer was instructed to put the footpath in repair as soon as possible.
—Drainage Matters.— Air J, Sanderson, architect, wrolion Ojchnlf of Messrs Burgess. Frasei and C». : , pointing out that tlu-re wtu at present no possibility of getting away the waste water from the lift 10 he placed in their new warehouse', and asking the Council to consider the a.lvisalblenes.') of lajing a drain in Gill Street to the Huatok-i stream. This was also necessary for storm wnti-r from the roofs.
The engineer was authorised to have adrjin put down in Hill Street from Currio Street to the lluatoki to serve these and other premises. .Mr Frank Messenger wrote asking l\r permission to connect Mr J. S. McKellars property in Devon Street witli the Devon St root sewer.—Granted. The foreman was given permission to put a branch drain lo Mrs Vut-.s' properly in St. Aubyn Street. ii.r I). Ilerry requestod that a drain connection Lo made with his dwelling fiom ihe St. Aubyn Street drain was also complied with. —Abattoir Charges.— The Secretary to the Department of Agriculture 'intimated that the amended charges in connection with the Council's abattoir hud been ap--proved, and Hie Government Printer hud been asked to gazette them in this week's Gazette and send the I Council DO extracts.
—Fire Station Site,— Mr F. Hellringer, Captain of the .New Plymouth Fire Hrigade, wrote on behalf of the brigado asking the Council to remove the shed formerly used as a fire station in the East Ward to a site further eastward, opposite Cambridge Boarding-house. The matter was deferred in order that the brigade might furnish further particulars.
—Building Dye-laws.— Messrs Webster and McKellar forwarded pluns, and asked the Council's permission to add a small wooden room 7ft by lift to their present olltce accommodation in Currie Street. Owing to the rotten state of the- foundations it would be out of the question for them t« build a brick" wall for such small additional accommodation. The engineer reported that as the bye-laws specilied brick, he hud been unable to grant permission, and so referred the matter to the Council. It wis agreed that the committee should inspect tin; premises on Monday afternoon.
Filters Contract.— Messrs Palmer and Co., Consulting (Engineers, of Wellington, wrote ask!ng for payment of the balance, £UST, on the contract, for titters. The vngire r was asked <io report is to how far the work was completed. —Water Power.— Mr R. Chambers; machinery importer, asked for permission for a client of his to use water from the main at the present pressure to drive a water engine, until the new upply was ready for use.

—Screenings.— A letter was received from IV. W. Knyvett, accepting the Council's offer of fis per yard for 250 yds of screenings. ' It was resolved that in all future, contracts which the Council calls for broken metal, a clause be inserted that the screenings also be the proroi'ty of the Council. —Dangerous Posts.— f'r. Ahier drew attention to the dangerous position of the railway notice, posts in Cameron Street. It was decided to request the department to remove the posts further back. —Annual Supplies.— Tenders for annual supplier were opened. Those of J. Ifoskin for the supply of coal at £1 17s per ton, and lirewood nt £1 His per cord were accepted. The other tenders for various supplies \wi\' referred to the vnigineer to be .'•c'-eduled and reported upon at the Council meeting on Monday night. —Dye-laws lu answer to Cr. Collis, the 'Town | Clerk said that the solicitors were now busily engaged In reviewing the water supply bye-laws, and sundry other bye-laws passed by tho Council were also referred to them. The byc-lnw relating to the restriction or betting' iii the Hectvation Ground was in their hands'. A number of samltary bye-laws recommended by Mr Kendall, the heutth lns|iecti>i', ne.ded attention as soon as the committee could meet.
