Harbour Master's Report.
At Friday's meeting of the Harbour itoard, Ca 1)1 ain Hood, harbour niaster, reported : During the four weeks ending Fvb. la, 33 steamers berthed at tho wharf, the aggregate gross tonnage amounting to 31,188 tons. The imports amounted to 3116 tons, including 400 tons railway coal and 288 tons local coal, The exports amounted to 1082 tons, making, jwith the imports, a total trade of 4198 tons.
During the four weeks very fine and calm weathes had been experienced, jthus enabling 'tho dredge to make good progress the spit at the end lof the breakwater. The dredge worked 20 days, making 31*5 trips, removing 20,766 cubic yards of sand land silt during the last two weeks. He had had the dredge employed ro'moving several shallow patches in .various parts of the harbour. The new port light having arrived 'from England was now fixed, and 'was working in flic new tower. The ! two-wick capillary was working very satisfactorily, but when using the | vapour lamp (Kitson's) they were not getting such good results, ow'ing to the mantles 'giving trouble. He was| replacing the lower beacon !,by a new one, anil would then place the old lamp in it.
I The jjwhole of the staff, both dredge and wharf hands, had had 'their annual leave for 1903.
