SWIMMING.

SPURTS AT THE 11ATJIS. There was an excellent attendance at the iiitm'icipni baths on 'lhuri-'day afternoon to witness the sports promoted by the New Plymouth Swimming Club. Tho weather was glorious for the occasion, ami the spectsitors were treated to a gocd exhibition of swimming, div ing, and water polo,, the programme being pleasantly varied. The first event was got off at 3 o'clock, and the programme was well conducted by the following officials : —Secretary, Mr C. Seabright ; handicapper a"d starter, Mr, W. Lints ; stewards. Messrs If. StocUer, T. A. Kivell, and A. Standish ; judges, Messrs \\ . Newman and G. Tisch. | The swimming events were well contested:. and some exiting finishes aroused enthusiasm. S. Renneet and A. V. Stohr were in especially good form, while H. Gibbon and Seabright also Mliovved up well under their handicaps. A speriul feature was maJde of live diving competitions, wltich attracted good entries. The display of neat and high diving was good, and in the -diving for plates thrown on the bottom of the baths several of the men were applauded for recovery of eight out of the twelvo plates', u> accomplish which feat great endurance and perseverance were evidenced. It. Mullock secured first and second in , t I'ese events. It is to be regretted; that only four young ladies contested the ladies' race, as this health-giving form of recreation should be encouraged ninong the fair sex. JJiss Hutchison, who- swims with a strong double over-arm stroke, won comfortably from Miss Garner, who, with tho other two competitors, warn the old-fashioned breasttrokc.
