(To the Editor.) Sir,—llcteKor's JJicl'ionury has the following reference to the frog : "Of the genus liana ; they swim very rapidly, uml take long leaps. Many of the species uttor lotnl notes in the springtime." Jt would «|ipear that in this town we have a dry-land species of tlie genus liana— I a species which liuunts the street cor- I ner ami at all seasons, und crunks from earlj- morn to dewy eve. Members of this species also take long leaps they jump at conclusion* without apparently judging either distance or direction. Though but poorly acquainted with their theme they crouk none the less dogmuiti- 1 cully on that account; which, by the way, has ever been one of the traits of the genus ltan«. Thosy who devoted their time, their energy, and as- in my own case, their money to the carrying out of the recent Kxhibition and CarnivuT, ure just now the objects of much ud- I verse criticism. .Much of this criticism is unfuir ; much of it is based 1 on hearsay evidence. Jn your Issue of Tuesday there apjH'arii a letler' from one who, under the sncred 1 name of Honesty," uttucks me in ' my cupacity as hon. .secretary of the Swimming Spons. JI this conns- 1 pondent were as honest as lie cluimH | ! to be, he would have shown mora modest}' in the choice of his nomen- 1 cluLure—he would lmve signed h. : s| own name to the ultuck. He would also have taken some pains to nc- ' (|u«int himself with the facts of the case, and, hence lie would not havt» published that which has been desig-' tinted as 111;- must reprehensible of, all statements—a half truth. He : tells us that certain competitors in 1 the .Swimming Sports have not received their prizes, and from this he ' adorns u tale, lie is probalUly aware j that money prizes cannot lie paid to amateurs ; for such competitors l i<>- ; phies tav alone available. On (| K . j very week of the Swimming Sports 1 issued to each prize w inner the fol- J lowing order i—* 1 Please supplv to'l bearer liopliy to the value (vuluu ! here Rtuted), and fonvurd accountl and order to tjie secretary as soon', as possible. Signed I'. 11. lioss, I ecretnry Swimming Sijtirts Com- | miltee. rtc." These orders could i have been executed by lrades|>eople < in any part of the colony. 1 cer- i ipiiily iind, on making inquiries io-'i day, that all of these orders have I not yet been ivturned to the seciv-jl ' a i'.v, but, on the other hand, 1 may i add, that neither has Ihe secretary 1 received any complaints from those ' who have apparently neglected their I privilege of presenting these orders, i i Vol - this neglect, surely, even " 110- * nesty " could not reasonably blame 1 us. —I am, etc., \ IV 11. IIOSS, ( Hon. See. Swimming Sports Cum- J UlHtec. I March 11. \
