The property could be had lor £IB,OOO. In replying. Sir J. G. Ward pointed out that the Railway Department had no vote under which it could purchase the place, and was not likely lo get o>ne. Jf anything were to be done in the direction indicated by the deputation it could only be done on the recommendation from the Land Purchase Hoard as a railway investment. lie was not favourable to the purchase, not because he disagreed with the deputation's viewa, but because if tile Department commenced buying pleasure resorts of this kind it would be met with similar requests for purili is<- all over the colony, and it could n>t coiitompllate anything like that, lie was s'tn'y the corporation bodies could not sve their way to purchase tile propel ty, and promised to communicate with tlie Premier am' Ministers on the subject.
