—Crossing.— In reference to a request by Mr Mnisey for a crossing at Wallace I'laee, the engineer mentioned in his eport that the request could Ire met when the drain was put in through Standifvh's property. Mr Maisey lso wanted Hie footpath formed in \alluce Place from Cutiield to RUiot oanls. This was a small. job, and mild l,e done at the same time us tho drain.:

C. Street iron Devon street to .Molesworth Str.-el and portion of (Jill street iim lound that the water channel it Uardet Street which passed Mn Jones premises- must certainly at times be offensive to residents oi this swelling, as it was unformed H also had less fall than could easily be obtained by the const met ior of say a concrete channel, whic] would be a decided improvement Jhe channel in (iill Street was aisi unformed, but had more fail. ,\ concrute gutter would be an improvement in this street also, but he suggested that the greatest benefit would be derived if a sewer were taken up Gill Street, so as to serv, the various properties in the street By moans of such a sewer properlies adjacent would be enabled tc haven connection therewith, ami the practice of allowing house and other slop waters to flow in open gutters would cease to exist so fni as the area served by the guttei was concerned. There was always a certain quantity and at times *<i large volume of drainage from Mi Nicholls' laundry and other premise; flowing along the channels in Uill and l.iai-riet Streets. The report, was referred to th« sewer committee. —Legal Opinion.— On the motion of the Mayor it was resolved to recommend to the incoming new Council that the Borough Town Clerk bo appointed legal adviser to the Council at a remuneration to be agreed upon. —An Old- Employee.— A. Olivers, borough carter, wrote tendering his resignation after 21 yea re' service, and asking for a recommemmtion. which request. the Town ClerK was instructed to comply with. —Water Scheme.— The engineer reported in regard to Mr Williams' contract that the contractor had finished the lining of tho tunnel, with the exrcplioii of a few chains of invert and two short length*, one at the s-haft and tho other at the side drive. Tie anticipated that the work would be completed in a fortnight. There remained, of course, the excavation at the intake before the water would be available, and a considerable amount of surface work before the contract was complete. Itogurding the reservoir, this work was getting on towards- completion, All tho concrpte work had bom finished, a large proportion of the asphalt lining was laid down, and the roof well in hand. Ho expected it would bo ready before the water could l*. let through the tunnel. The filters were practically complete. lie had had the water turned on to test, as fur as possible, tightness of the rust joints. There were a good many leaks, which the contractor was now engaged in caulking up. The new mains had been connected up with the old ones at Mill Uoad and Eliot Street. The connection would be made at the old pumping station as soon as he got the special pipes from Dunedin. Services were being laid along Victoria Hoad wherever they had been applied for. —Trniuagc.—
The section in Ilroughani Street from Devon to Vivian Streets hail been completed, the engineer's report stated. The excavation had been taken out to the, level to Gill Street end. and the bottom bo far was sound. 'Pin- outlet pipes had been laid from the stream to the manhole in (Jill Street, the manhole finished, and the pipes laid from there to the (liter chumbcr. —Standish Hill.— The engineer reported that he had examined the battens in the Standish Hill cutting, and did not see that there was anything dangerous übout them. The tender of F, M. Urayling U construct a concrete culvert in tiwen ' Stret was accepted at £1298 10s 6d. I —Foreman.— Twelve applications were received for the position of borough foreman. .Mr Samuel Hooker, the present borough foreman at Nelson, who had i excellent credentials, was appointed. ,
