JAPANESE MOVE RAPIDLY* KUROPATKIN IS ASTONISHED. (Received March 6, 10.55 p.m.) LONDON, March (i. The Japanese at Sanchiapu, eastwards of Chantan, began an attack on Chantan. The Japanese simultaneously advanced from the direction of Liao, completely surprising the Russians, who forthwith made strenuous efforts ' to concentrate at Mukden to oppose Nogi. The latter's extraordinary rapid march astounded Kuropatkin. Several Japanese divisions have appeared to the west of the Japanese troops, attacking from the southwest. The fighting on Saturday was within sight of Mukden. During an artillery duel westward of Mukden* yesterday Japanese shells burst within four kilometres of the Chinese imperial tombs. Only the Japanese imperial guards division formerly attached to Kuroki participated. Two other attacks were made on itli'e centre and maintained a fierce demonstration while the Russian right left was pressed back on the plain between Putilofl hill and the railway.. Masked by smoke the guns of the Russian artillery lire redoubled in intensity, while projectiles from the Japanese siege guns burst along the line between PutilolT and Linshipu
