FRENCH FIGHT WITH NATIVES. (Received Feb. 27, 0.57 a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 20. News from the New Hebrides states tjiat an encounter has occurred at Mallicolio between the natives and the crew of the French steamer Ne Oblie. Captain Pirrt found the natives in possession of a whulcboat stolen from a French trader. He took charge of the boat, and the natives, hiding in a thicket, openud lire on the steamer. Captain Piret replied from two guns aboard the vessel. After two hundred shots had been exchanged the natives retired. French reports state that several French missionaries express fear of a general massacre of Europeans, and ask for the protectionoor. r a warship.
