After recent performances J'aritutu can now be summed up as one of outbest handicap horses. He is perfectly sound at present, and, in the of training on all right he ■ should have something to say in the j bigger handicap events to be decided 'during the autumn meetings. Red Gauntlet is still sulVering from 'the effects of an attack of influenza, i contracted prior to the last Wellington meeting.
111 the Post Handicap, won by Golden Lily at the ('.J.C. meeting, Air Stead's mare got a bit knocked nbont. both hind legs having the skin torn oil'. It is lo be hoped it is nothing serious, as she appearco to be getting into form. So far, as a three-year-old, she has run very disappointingly. Without wishing to detract from the performance of Stronghold in the Middle Park Plate, it is just as well to mention that Noctuiform (the favourite) got cast in his box on the previous night and slightly injured his off hind fetlock. He was very sore after his effort in the race. After no less than four consecutive attempts on the part of Connie 'Jhiel to land the C.J.C. Midsummer Cup he accomplished his aim last [week. Cannie Chiel has now l>een before the public for live seasons,' and his record is far from satisfactory. He has started in 73 events, and only won 14. Auckland was represented by 20 horses at the Taranaki J.C's meeting, but only four first prizes were tho result, Lady Annie being responsible for two, whilst Inniskillen jand Hautapu accounted for a hurdle race each.
Indian Prince, u two-year-old full bro-ther to King lii 11\, owned i>\ Mr 10. J. Watt, is to be broken in .shortly. Mr E. J. Watt, who has lx>eii lor a trip to the Old Country, is expected back in the colony early next month. Starshoot, Melodeon, ami Submarine are reported to bo doing fust work at Napier. A. Haynor, of lVilding, has purchased Kepulso (the hurdler) from lion. J. 1). Ormoml on behalf of a patron of tho utable. J After Otaio's indilVerent displays over sticks at the Marlon meeting, ,his owner relegated him to hard labour. Otaio may be seen in the Apiti district sledging posts.
Black Squall, half sister to Shrapnel, changed hands the other day for £SO, has been engaged in hack events at Westport. " Hednction got a bad btirnp at the O.J.C. meeting the second day, and ;is now on the invalid list.
J. McCombe, who is retained by the lion. (i. McLean as lirst horseman, will ride for Mr J. Buckley when his services arc available.
F. Tilly has a formidable team under his control at Fordell, including Bounce, Ziska, I'urity, Shanks, Explode, Asteroid, St. Joe, Solution, Springbok, and other well-known performers.
L. 11. Hewitt, the Southern horseman, must account himself very lucky by escaping with such lenient punishment as the suspension of a | couple of days for eroding in the Midsummer Handicap run at li,iccar|ton last Thursday. The O.J.C. stewards usually inflict a much severer I penalty for the offence than that which they mcterl out to Hewitt. XC. Dorrett, the veteran horseman, was once again seen in the colours of Mr O. U, Slea d. when he rode Munjeet in the LytteHon l'late last Thursday. Derrett's services were called into request after Hewitt had bran ordered by the stewands to sitund down for the l est of the meeting. Derrett landed Munjeet an easy winner, and received u great ovation when he returned to scale' Helania received solid support in Auckland for both her ettorts at the Taranaki meeting, bat she failed jbadly, and her displays were very disappointing to her connections She did not wait for the Egmont meeting, but was taken back home. ,' U „,* N "'' cklut s (iis l >la i' «< Hie recent iaranaki meeting must have been very disappointing to her connections, She had been doing very good track work before leaving to fulfil her engagements. b I'lie Needle's victories at tiisborne aiv the lirst he has achieved since he accounted for the Avondaie Handicap at the Avondaie Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting in Jlj s vic . Tory in the Flying Handicap cost the Auckland bookmakers a lot of money oodmount shows signs of returning to the lorm lie showed at the latter end of last season. 'lhe well-performed pony Annoyed is lor sale.
An increase of LU2(i was passed through the totalisators at the Gisborne R.C. summer meeting- on the amount handled last year, and ~~ ov t*r the previous one. \al Kosa was disposed of cheaply ti s=hort time ago. and it is understood that he will do stud duty in the North of Auckland district. Ihe I'ujlack, who was sent over to Sydney to 1\ Nolan some time ago, has failed to stand a preparation and n is probable he will be shipped date 10 ,N, ' n Zualan<J at «" early
