A private meeting of the Land Commission to arrange details was held at llunedin yesterday. Mr J. \V. Shaw has been nominated as the (Hugo candidate for a Khodes scholarship. The business ol' the Empire Hotel, Willis street, Wellington, has been floated into a limited liability company, with a cap tai of £40,000. The Australian Workers Unions have amalgamated into one body for the whole Commonwealth, with a membership of over 21,000.
Evidence was adduced on Thursday before the Federal Navigation Conitmission which went to show that there is considerable shanghaiing of seamen at Newcastle. In another oolumn Mr Newton King advertises entries for his annua! Waiwakaiho sheep fair, which will be held on Thursday, Fd >ruary 2Sth, commencing at 11 o'clock. The Auckland City Council on Thursday night 'decided to appeal again.st a decision which was given in the .Supreme Court against its bye-law re loitering in streets. It is reported that an improved water service for the city of Nelson is now complete, and the additional main gives a splendid pressure of water.
A deputation from the Trades anil Labour Council waited on the I'remier on Thursday evening, ami complained that the Shops Act was not being enforced. The Premier said the Government was not responsible for the 'delay in bringing a test case, as he had not the fixing of the Appeal Court dates. I'litil a test case had been decided it was no use enforcing section 2 of the Act. Advice lias been received from England that Messrs Vernon Kout, Percy Scantlebury, and Arthur Fair, have all passed the first section of the examination for the L.L.U. degree of the N.Z. I'niversity. They were tile only candidates sent up by Nelson College for that examination, but all the college undergraduates werp successful in keeping university terms.

An application was made at the Police Court yesterday by Jlr Farrar (custodian of the Old People's Home) for a prohibition order against an old age and Imperial pensioner. Jlr Farrar stated that the pensioner left jJw Home on .January r>th, but while there was frequently the worse for liquor.
