The clerk was instructed to write . tin: Taranaki Count,y Council that ' this Council would have passed part , of their account for payment «i t'iimcetine* if a credit note .had been received fee tlie subsidy paid the Taranaki .l\C. on Parihnka Jtoad ' Hoard rates, vMch should have been i [paid to Egmonl County Council in-, stead. ' I —Elthani I toad l.oan. — ,

Cr .Maxwell said he had seen in the Taranaki papers a reference to the Elthani Hoad l.oan. in which it appeared a county loan which the Taranaki county was raising was blocked owing to the Kltham Hoad Loan interest being in arrear, ami that the Taranaki County Council apparently repudiated liability, as it claimed that the debt, now belonged to the Egmont County. It was true that at the time of the adjustment between the two counties it was agreed that the Egmont Council should lake over and administer the Elthani Uoad Loan, which it was thought

under the Act of 1900 could be done, but when the question of taking over ioans from the' Waimate Hoad Board was placed before the Treas-

ury it was found that the 19(10 Act had been repealed and 1 ha! the Council had not the power to take over any loan unless the local authority, which raised it, had ceased to exist. It appealed therefore that' the Taranaki Council would still have to administer the Elthani Uoad Loan until an amendment of the lawwere made. 'Hie clerk stated he had communicated with the Taranaki County | Council and had also forwarded n I copy of the letter from the Treasury j to . the Taranaki Council, but had not ' received any acknowledgement. | The clerk was instructed to agai.v communicate with Taranaki County | Council and forward a second copy of letter from the Treasury.—Times.
