His Worship stnW'< - from an estimate of receipt ' and exiKinses for the coming yea - prepared by the Town Clerk ther I would be a deficiency of £147. Al - though ho jwas averse to anticipat ' ing the work of the incoming coun s ,cil. there • was a distinct advantug i in carrying out urgent works a t once. Cr. Cliff seconded the motion oi the ground that it would cost 2i - per cent, more if thc work were de 9 layed for three months. 1 Cr. Wood opposed the motion. Hi e pointed out that in connection wit! , the electric light thc council wouU i? be £2OOO short, and he consider© e there were other streets which re 1 quired attention quite as urgently, i • 'not more so, than those mentioned i - the engineer's report. He though r the proper way would be to go fo - a loan, though he felt sure it woul not be carried. Cr. Wilson advocated the happ; medium between,' caution and rash 1 ness, and while not agreeing to al s the proposed expenditure, he woul 1 advocate thc most urgent. He mov ■J ed that the streets stated to be worj out should first be attended to, an • that Cameron Street be inetalle< with a view to next year taking o: the crown of Eliot Street. While declinini to vote for the whole scheme he wa in favour of the more urgent wor] . being done. Cr. Woods said that if Cr. Wilso; would include about four chains i Hobson Street and a piece at th end of Gill Street he fwould vot for the amendment, s- Cr. Medley suggested deferring th e matter to enable councillors to ii y spect Cameron Street. Cr. Ahier said the whole of th trartlc from the Junction Road cam down Cameron Street, and he r that, as soon as thatj street wa 0 metalled two or three new house would be erected. The Mayor deprecated forcing th matter, but the engineer had carefu! ly gone over all the streets in th t borough, and reported on which wer " most in need of repair. The counci ■f should not consider the borough del) r in connection with its working e. > penses. He was satisfied that the - could not cut nown their ordinal', e expenses to provide for the compk - tion of loan works. The ratepayer would have to provide the money fo completing the loan works. If th council preferred to,' undertake out, the smaller scheme, he was quit 1 willing to withilraw his motion. H was very pleased at getting th council to do something. ii Thc amendment was then carried, v Cr.
