A strange crime was committed at Bergamo, in Italy, last month. At a late hour at night, ahorse and trap belonging to Signor Laroupi, a wellknwon citizen, drew up in front of hit house, on the seat Signor Laroupi's j headless body., with the reins tightly (wrapped round the hands.. The crime is believed to have been committed jby members of a secret society, among whom Signor LaroupL had enemies. The head was afterwards found in a sack containing Christmas presents, which the murdered man had purchased in a neighbouring town earlier in the day. After decapitating their victim, the murderers had secured the body in the trap and whipped up the horse. The animal, having frequently travelled by the same road, found its way home. A correspondent signing himself " latent " writes to the North Otago T'mes:—" Some years ago a newspaper contained an item stating that a doctor in a French town, having hud a large number of diphtheria cases which he had Seen quite unable to successfully treat, at last applied kerosene to the affected part, that t'he child quickly recovered, and the, doctor never, had a fatal case afterwards. I am inclined to place some reliance upon the above, as in two cases of diphtheria in my own family I applied, by means of a small, soft brush, kerosene to the fungus, and I am able to .state, that after three applications to one child and only one to the other, complete cur* resulted.
