Th_* Chinese sitaitements that the Japanese were unprepared to resist misled the Russians into attacking Gvmidl Oku. The Russians' provisions are scarce. Admiral Hotrovffcy's squadron from Jibuti 1 has sailed for Madagascar. There arc persistent reports that that Gummi Gripenberg accuses General Kuroputkin of inadequately reinforcing hiui during tl:-© progress of the fighting. The two arc utterly at variance. General Gripenberg would like to return. GRIPEUBERG RESIGHS. ILL-HEALTH ASSIGNED AS THE REASON. (Received Feb. 5, 4.30 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 4. It is reported from St. Petersburg that General Oriperberg has transferred his command to General Xiloff, and returns home on the ground of ill-health. JAPAHESE OFFICIAL REFORT. SYDNEY, Fel). 3. Our casualties were about seven thousand,; the Russian at least ten thousand." DESPERATE POSITION OF JAPANESE A GOOD RECOVERY MADE. (Received Feb. 5, 4.20 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 4. Field-Marshal Oyama's despatches indicate a precarious position of the Japanese during the recent desperate four days' fighting. There were blinding snow-storms, and the temperature fell to thirty degrees centigrade be'ow zero. General Gripenberg surprised the Lci-kou-tai garrison, which resisted all day and (ought its way out in the darkness. The Russians pressed their advantage m various directions, involving lite Japanese in great difficulties. For a lime the position was very critical. The Japanese left wing lost heavily, and was compelled to retreat. The Russians caught another detachment at Sumapao, and -desperate bandrto-hand fighting tooK' place. The Japanese finally repulsed the attack. On the morning of the 26th the Russians fired into the rear of the Japanese centro, which turned and practically annihilated Ihcm, only two hundred surrenderee. Meanwhile Field-Marshal ; Oyama reinforced • Oki and ordered .the recapture of Lei-kou-tai. SERIOUS CHARGE AGAISST RUSSIAHS(Received Feb. 5, 4.30 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 4. Field-Marshal Oyama reports that '29 Japanese pickets, surrounded by Russians at Huanglashatze on the 26th January, surrendered after the majority had been wounded, and that thereupon the Russian soldiers mutilated all the wounded men. THE BALTIC FLEET. (Received Feb. 5, 4.30 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 4. The ship Lismore, which has arrived at Port Louis, Mauritius, reports that on January 28th the Baltic Fleet was nchored at the island of Nossi-be, off the north of Madagascar, in company with a dozen colliers. A Francoi-Russian syndicate has contracted to coal the third Baltic Sleet, THE BORTH SEA COMMISSION FIRING BY ROZiHDESTVENSKY' S ' ORDERS', A NORWEGIAN WITNESS. . PARIS,. Feb. 3. Captain Clado testified that Admiral- Rozbdestvensky gave orders to fire on the trawlers.
