The Commissioner of Police strongly denies Dr. Roth's statements rcgarding Hie manner in which native prisoners are arrested and treatHe is satisfied that humane mcare employed by the police. for using rifles to threaten witnesses*, that was absolutely untrue. He |Jad reliable information that Dr. Rwth had approached what may be termed the "'scum and riff-raft" to securer-evidence, and had refused in many caees?H» approach more respected of the populous districts. He considered it his duty to j protect the police, wlio were a hardworking, honest body of men, who performed their duty under hardships with tact and discretion. He courted the fullest inquiry. * (Dr. Roth is a learned and highly respecfed employee of the Quecnsr land Civil Service, and is an authority on all that pertains to the aborigines. He is the author of a most instructive book on the subject, and has been in control of the Queensland aborigines for some years. The police denials which lie has met are a repetition of those .which have always been advanced against every cn'ticisan of the way • in which the Western Australian na- , tive? are treated.
