THE PROPOSED NEW LIGHTHOUSE.
(Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 31. A master mariner, trading out of Wellington, discussing the proposal to erect a low level light at Pcncarrow, Wellington Heads, suggests that the Marine Department be asked to place a low level coastol light at a point further out along the coast, either nt Tongue Point "or at Cape Terawhit-i—the lotter for preference. The main features and approximate distanfes along the coast from Pencarrow to Terawhiti are as follow :—Pencarrow to Sinclair Head, six miles; Sinclair Head to Tongue Point, two miles and a half; Tongue Point to Otorangi Bay, three miles and a half ; Otorangi to Cape Terawhiti, about a mile! Further in there is foul ground along the coast in the i neighbourhood of Tongue Point. The most notnble of the dangerous places are Tom's Rock (where the Nambucca was supposed to have struck), Kurori Rock, and Luna Rock. To show where the foul ground is and to guide largp and smal} vessels until they have pipked up Pencarrow, a light at Tongue Point or at Terawhiti would be of the utmost service. At the latter place it would show further round into Cook Straits. The lowlevel coast in these parts is often visible in fog when Pencarrow is obscured, and plenty of suitable sites 70ft to 100 ft above water level could be found for a low level light. Then besides its use for navigation, such a lighthouse would also be an observing and signal station connected by telephone with Wellington.
