THE MAORI COLLEGE CONFERENCE.
(Per Press Association.) WAIROA, Jan. 8.1. ihe first sitting of the ninth conference of Te Auto College ex-pupil* am friends took place ut Mohaku on Saturday. At the opening meeting Drs. Mason, Pomare, De Lisle, and J. ihornton, principal of Te Aute College, delivered the opening speeches. Welcome was made to four Mohaka chiefs, to which representative chiefs replied. Proceedings opened with an address by Dr. De Lisle on the subject of cleanliness. Dr Mason dwelt on the vices of the Maoris and pakefcis, and explained how to get rid of them-. Dr. Pomare summed up by n speech on all the previous subjects dealt with. The Hev A. Williams arrived in the evening' and a grand social was held. On Sunday morning a service was conducted by the Revs. H. Huata ami A. Williams, ami afterwards the congregation assembled for the unveiling of Pnramena Tumatarou's tomb, In the afternoon Mr Thornton delivered an leloquent address On Monday the following list of subjects for discussion was read out : The Marriage Question, the Mormon Question, tho Liquor Traffic, Working of Maori Councils, Model Settlement made -on the Wanganui River, Tohungas, the Progress of Sanitary Reform, Local School Quost on, the Employment of Native Girls in Wool-sheds. Drs. Mason, Pomare, and De Lisle wont to Wtviktivcmoana yesterday.
